“They asked only one thing, that we remember the poor…”
Pope Pius XI says that social justice can be measured for each institution in terms of that institution’s success in elevating the dignity, status, power, and well-being of every participating person and family affected by that institution. At GALF we agree because assuming that social justice pertains only to the individual order is to turn Catholic social teaching into a rather vapid and flabby variety of Fabian socialism.
Father Ferree makes it clear that it is unnecessary—even wrong and perhaps sinful—to do nothing and wait for the state to take action and correct the flaws in the common good. The deterioration of our moral framework and the emergence of social barriers to individual fulfillment lead inevitably to what social scientists call “alienation.” These artificial barriers deprive people of equal opportunity and the means to control their own destinies, and thus reinforce injustices and divisions in society. A Thomistic orientation towards equality of opportunity can only be realized when we live the gospel by picking up our brothers in their times of need and giving them hope for a better tomorrow. This is the way Fr. Gerry Creedon lived and is the mission of GALF.
